Earth Quakes

When an earthquake strikes the ground begins to shake ferociously because the rocks under the earths surface shift and tear.
The earth is covered by a layer of rock, that’s called the crust. The crust forms the land and the ocean floor. The crust is divided up into pieces called the plates and the plates only move one or two centimes a year.
An earthquake is caused by the plates pushing and grinding against each other with great force and when the pressure is released, the land above shakes causing an earthquake.
Earthquakes are most likely to happen in some parts of the world more then others. Earthquakes mostly happen on the fault line which is the cracks in the crust where the plates move against each other. Most of the faults are under oceans and seas. But some of them can be seen on land.
Earthquakes happen all the time, some are big and damage cities and towns but earthquakes are not all big and deadly.

Under Water Hockey

On the 2nd of July, 24 damn awesome students from Taupo Syndicate competed in the Wellington Under Water Hockey mini league. We were placed in two teams - Plimmerton Stingrays and Plimmerton Marlins. Everyone played so well resulting in the Plimmerton Stingrays smashing (kinda) Marsden in the finals and got GOLD!!!! (first place) The Plimmerton Marlins also played well and got 9th equal. It was an awesome night, everyone had so much fun and we were all exhausted afterwards!!!

Room 16s Light experiments

On Monday 16th Room 16 were doing light experiments. Using a light box we learnt about concave convex, and using mirrors ,prisms and other shiny things. Using the light box we also made rainbows, and bent the light. We also made bubbles with dish washing liquid and looked at the colours that appeared on them, red is the last colour you see before the bubble pops. We created bubbles with another bubble inside!! Using the colour spinner we spun it round and made it all white!!

Camp

This is room 14's first day on camp. We were there from Monday 7th - Wednesday 9th March. We were followed by Room 15. Rooms 16 went on Monday 28th - Wednesday 2nd March and room 17 went on Wednesday 2nd - Friday 4th. We all had a great time. One of the main foci for camp was to band as a class, we think this was achieved by all those that attended

Black and Red Day

So for the colleges who wear mufti they are having a black and red day on Friday and the money that is collected is going to Chch. We at Plimmerton School are also have a black and red day. As well as dressing in black and red we are also going to have an Interaction Day. This is where we get together across the school in groups from New Entrant level to Year 8 level. We are going to be baking, making crafts or writing letters or cards. The baking and crafts are going to be sold at the end of the day and all of the money that we raise will be sent to help the people of Chch. We hope that as well as making a lot of money we will also get to have a great day with the students of all ages.

Sadness...

We have all discussed the devastation, in Christchurch, with our classes this morning. We have talked about our evacuation plan if we were to be hit by an earthquake during lunch time. Where do we go? What do we do? What do we stay away from? How important it is to stay as calm as possible despite what we are going through.

Our thoughts and love go out, not only to the students and teachers but to all those effected by the earthquake. We wich you luck in getting your lives back into some sort of order. We feel so helpless at the moment knowing that there is so much to do but so little we can do at the moment. Some of our students are thinking of ways in which we can help.
